Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA)
Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is the most common hospital acquired infection in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more people in the United States now die from the mostly hospital-acquired staph infection MRSA than from AIDS. The CDC estimates that more than 94,000 people developed a serious MRSA infection in 2005 and approximately 18,650 people died during a hospital stay as a result.
The goal of this initiative is to reduce rates of healthcare associated MRSA infections.
Under the 9th SOW, selected hospitals will be monitoring MRSA-related data by using the CDC National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) Multi-Drug Resistant Organism (MDRO) module. The two MDRO metrics being used are the nosocomial MRSA infection rate (calculated as the number of NHSN MRSA infections divided by 1,000 patient days by selected patient care location or unit) and the incidence rate of hospital-onset MRSA based on clinical culture (calculated as the number of first positive MRSA cultures divided by 1,000 patient days).
Masspro is working with participating hospitals to improve safety by improving healthcare processes and systems related to prevention, identification and treatment of MRSA within their organizations. Masspro is assisting participating hospitals in evaluating current MRSA prevention policies and practice and developing and implementing strategies for improvement. Specifically, Masspro Performance Improvement Advisors provide the following services:
Conduct consultative visits to assess current practices and strategies
Promote use of multidisciplinary frontline teams to lead improvement work
Provide tools, resources and technical assistance in implementing best practices related to MRSA prevention
Promote collaboration, sharing and problem solving among participating hospitals through conference calls, email discussions and participant meetings
Host educational training session via WebEx and teleconference
Masspro will also train participating hospitals on the AHRQ TeamSTEPPS (Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety), an evidence-based approach to improve communication and teamwork skills among healthcare professionals that will improve patient safety in their organization.
