Technology: Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) and Bar Coding
“Medication errors and adverse drug events (ADEs) are common, costly and clinically important problems.” “Systems-based analysis of medication errors and ADEs suggest that changes in the medication ordering system, including the introduction of computerized physician order entry (CPOE) with clinical decision support systems (CDSSs), may reduce medication-related errors.”
“CPOE refers to a variety of computer-based systems of ordering medications, which share the common features of automating the medication ordering process. Basic CPOE ensures standardized, legible, complete orders by only accepting typed orders in standard and complete format.” Masspro, as chartered in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) 8th Scope of Work, will work with select Massachusetts hospitals to engage senior hospital leadership in planning for the implementation of CPOE.
Masspro will provide technical support to hospital executive management, ie. Chief Information Officers (CIO) and/or Chief Financial Officers (CFO) in the development and implementation of CPOE. Masspro will be assisting with the development of “Learn and Share” sessions related to specific topics in the adoptin of CPOE within the clinical environments. These sessions support will include education on all aspects of CPOE, including infrastructure requirements, funding opportunities, day-to-day staffing requirements and associated costs, available applications, network partnership and successful examples of implementation, in support of a hospital’s implementation plan development. Masspro will then be working with a multi-stakeholder group to facilitate the implementation of the plan.
Masspro will employ its extensive experience in electronic health record (EHR) implementation, clinical redesign, and clinical information technology to guide hospitals smoothly through the adoption and implementation process.
